Function / Content

This series consists of journals recorded by the principals of Finke Primary school since its inception on 22/09/1958. The journals record chronological entries relating to the administration of the school and its facilities. Matters covered include school committees, security, difficulties relating to ordering and supply of vital equipment such as books, diesel, toilet seats, clothing, and water and electricity supplies. Volume one includes instructions for creating boomerangs and damper as well as Inma (ceremonial dance and song); treatment of head lice with DDT; a 1962 stocktake of equipment for the categories of furniture, music, school use, milk, cleaning, gardening, maps, and sleeping; and descriptions of the Finke River in flood. Volume two includes references to children tutoring the teacher in the local language, Luritja, as well as community film screenings with documentary films ordered from The National Film Library.
